ActLight was founded to develop photovoltaic modules using a new type of solar cell to power small electronic devices such as wireless sensors. The company is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland and has offices in Tokyo and San Francisco.
Today’s solar cells are optimized for large area solar panels and demonstrate poor performance under partly shaded conditions often typical for portable devices. ActLight’s “smart” solar cell offers dramatically enhanced performance in shading conditions and the possibility to create extremely small solar cells embedded with chip logic as one unit on proven CMOS technology. ActLight patented technology allows building of a solar module with a standard CMOS process, providing for the first time an embedded solar module of high efficiency.
ActLight will go to market with IP and supporting services. Revenue will be generated by technology licensing to foundries and royalties coming from companies using foundry services.
ActLight is establishing partnerships with electronics vendors and their component production partners, and is in discussions with several large companies including Toshiba and Fujitsu. The company also plans to work with foundries in order to get them to offer ActLight technology to their customers.
