WLI was founded in 1992 to develop wireless spread spectrum communication processors. It is privately held and is funded by the founders, private investors, manf. partners and the Hong Kong govt. WLI's manufacturing partners are Atmel for wafer fabrication and HP for RF test automation. WLI's current products are tightly focused on consumer cordless telephones and point-to-point computer data links. Its first product is a communications processor for full-duplex voice and modem links. To compliment the digital chip, WLI also makes a RF transceiver module. Together they form the core of a wireless spread spectrum telephone.

Although WLI is focused on cordless telephones, a narrow market with 90% of the production in the Asian market, its technology can be used for point-to-point data communications. This opens up a wide array of applications. SSLink provides either full or half duplex transmission at 2400bps. This is slow, but adequate for low-data rate communications such as bar code readers, POS terminals, remote data logging equipment, handheld terminals, security systems, etc. WLI can provide a complete reference design, enabling system OEMs with no spread spectrum or RF expertise to incorporate this technology into their product.

For higher data-rate communications, WLI's new DataLink product enables V.34 communication over a wireless link. DataLink cordless telephones simply have an extra jack that is compatible with any std. V.34 modem. Since WLI uses an analog spread spectrum technology it preserves the 3.4kHz bandwidth of the public telephone network enabling seamless wireless V.34 communications.

WLI appears to be another winner. They have few competitors (Rockwell, AMI and Cylink which licensed a design to Uniden and Cincinnati Microwave.) Everyone knows that analog narrowband cordless telephones are horrible! We feel this is a great opportunity for most reps. Certainly not for cordless telephones; but for all the data communications applications that can piggyback off WLI's consumer oriented technology.
